In his blog for the Chicago Sun Times, renowned film critic Roger Ebert announced that he is taking what he calls a “leave of presence.”
The 70-year-old writes in his blog that the main reason he is doing this is for his health. Ebert revealed that the “painful fracture” that made it difficult for him to walk has recently been revealed to be a cancer.
Back in 2002, the film critic lost his ability to speak and eat after undergoing surgery for thyroid and salivary gland cancer. He also underwent significant facial reconstruction on a collapsed jaw that altered his physical appearance.
As for Ebert’s movie reviews? Ebert assures his fans that a leave of presence means “I am not going away. My intent is to continue to write selected reviews but to leave the rest to a talented team of writers handpicked and greatly admired by me. What’s more, I’ll be able at last to do what I’ve always fantasized about doing: reviewing only the movies I want to review.”
Ebert notes in his blog that last year he wrote the most of his career that includes 306 movie reviews, a blog post or two a week plus assorted articles. He cites that pace as another reason for his need to take the leave of presence.
Ebert is best known as the film critic who, along with the late Gene Siskel, started the trademark thumbs up or down gesture when it comes to offering their opinion on films.
