4 TV Shows & A Movie For Ryan Murphy!

It looks like three hit TV shows aren’t enough for Ryan Murphy – he’s shopping a fourth around! According to EW, the very busy show-runner is pitching a brand new script alongside Lauren Gussis (co-executive producer of Showtime’s “Dexter”). Although if you’re expecting it to be anything like “Glee” or “The New Normal”, don’t.

The new project, entitled “Open”, sounds nothing like what we’ve seen from Ryan Murphy in recent years. It is described as “a modern, provocative exploration of human sexuality and relationships.” So it stands to reason that a basic cable network probably won’t pick up this project, although it is evidently being pitched to some of them. More likely, though, we’ll be seeing “Open” on a premium cable channel. Apparently, despite the fact that the project just began being shopped around, there are already more than a couple of networks interested in picking it up.

“Open” will be Ryan Murphy’s first project with 20th Century Fox’s cable production division, called Fox 21. Murphy currently has three TV shows on air, “Glee”, “The New Normal”, and “American Horror Story”. At the moment only the last of the three has been confirmed to return next season, but in all likelihood the other two will be as well.

In addition to his TV shows, Ryan Murphy is slated to direct an adaptation of the acclaimed Broadway play The Normal Heart. The play is an autobiographical work by Larry Kramer, which chronicles the ascent of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City during the early 1980s. Murphy’s adaptation will star Mark Ruffalo, Julia Roberts, Alec Baldwin, Jim Parsons, Taylor Kitsch, and Matt Bomer. Fun fact: Jim Parsons actually made his Broadway debut in the play’s 2011 Broadway premiere. The Normal Heart is set to air on HBO. Might this mean that HBO has some interest in picking up “Open”? We’ll have to wait and see.
