Justin Bieber spent this weekend in the Netherlands, but again his visit didn’t pass without incident. According to an update on the official facebook page of the Anne Frank house, which is an important museum in Amsterdam with a history within the second World War, Bieber paid them a visit yesterday and in the guest book he wrote “Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.”
This quickly sparked criticism within the Dutch media, with comments accusing the Canadian singer of self-promotion. Anne Frank, a Jewish girl stuck in Amsterdam, went into hiding and was eventually betrayed and later killed in a concentration camp in Germany. During the time that she was in hiding, she wrote a diary about her horrifying experiences. After her death, she became a symbol for the suffering of the Dutch Jews, and her diary was passed on throughout all of Europe.
This is why the Dutch media were so appalled when they learned about Justin’s comment in the guest book, because whether a comment like that is appropriate is highly questionable… To make matters worse, he also showed up over an hour late for his concert in the GelreDome in Arnhem, causing lots of problems for the thousands of teenage girls who had to go home by public transport.
Although this one hour might be nothing compared to the fiasco in London, about 500 girls stranded in Arnhem as they missed their last bus due to the fact that the concert ended an hour late. Fortunately, the GelreDome took measures into their own hands and hired several busses, which then drove through the entire country to drop the fans off at their homes one by one.
As popular as the star is with his Dutch fans, it seems like the rest of the Netherlands doesn’t appreciate him that much yet. He definitely hasn’t shown himself from his best side this weekend, so if he ever decides to come back, he’ll have something to make up for!
