We were all expecting that it might happen but that still didn’t help lessen the pain as NBC announced this week that musical drama, Smash, would not be renewed for a third season.

Season 2 showrunner Josh Safran admitted as far back as March that all involved with the show were “aware the show is not successful” but that it came as a shock when they were relegated to the Saturday evening timeslot – regarded as the place TV shows go on their way out. At the time he told TV Line that they had hoped NBC were going to move them to a better timeslot and give them a chance, but that wasn’t to eventuate. Fans were pleased to hear that with the cancellation a real possibility, Safran insisted that fans would not be “left hanging” and that they were constructing the season two finale “as a series finale”. He said, “The season has a beginning, middle and an end… [and] it just gets better and better.”

Safran has come under harsh criticism for the second season, particularly from season one showrunner, Theresa Rebeck, who described the current season as “a complete disaster”.

The show’s final two episodes will air as a double episode on Sunday, 26 May in the US. For UK fans, Sky Atlantic will start broadcasting the second season from July.
