As we previously reported, Brave princess Merida was recently added to the Disney princess lineup on May 11th. Merida is the 11th Disney princess, and the first to come from a Pixar film.

With the addition has come a makeover for Merida. The new image portrays Merida being older, thinner, and wearing a tight dress.

Disney has been placed under a vast amount of criticism for this transformation. In the film, Merida signified a real woman- she had curves, faults, and was not fixated on her appearance. People argue that by altering her appearance, Disney is diminishing what Merida stands for.

Change.org has started a petition against the studio that transformed Merida, which has gotten over 112,500 signatures. They say, ““Merida was created to break that mould – to give young girls a better, stronger role model, a more attainable role model, something of substance, not just a pretty face that waits around for romance.”

Disney responded with a short and firm statement: “Merida exemplifies what it means to be a Disney Princess through being brave, passionate, and confident and she remains the same strong and determined Merida from the movie whose inner qualities have inspired moms and daughters around the world.”

Do you think Merida’s change in image gets in the way of what she stands for?
