Since its inception in 2009, the light, music and ideas festival Vivid Live has been a highlight in the Sydney autumn calendar. Each year after dark Sydney is transformed into a canvas of light and sound and 2013 promises more of the same but with a special treat for Whovians.
Vivid Sydney announced today (15 May) that for one night only, the building of Sydney will be transformed in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the legendary BBC program, Doctor Who. So all Aussie Whovians should try and get themselves to Sydney on June 1 for this once in a lifetime event.
The grand façade of the iconic Customs House building at Circular Quay will form the backdrop for a spectacular 3D-mapped projection of Doctor Who “as he travels through space and time, pursued by some of his greatest enemies”.
New South Wales Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner said of the event “This is a one-night only celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, and sees Australian creative innovators, The Spinifex Group, working with the Doctor Who team to create projections that will deliver a show-stopping, unique anniversary celebration for Doctor Who’s legion of fans”.
The evening has been put together by Destination NSW in collaboration with BBC Worldwide Australia & New Zealand. In addition to the 3D projections, a special cinema screening of two episodes from the series will also take place.
Vivid Sydney runs from 24 May – 10 June with the Doctor Who event on Saturday 1 June. Viewing the illuminations is free and Projection Times for Customs House: 6.50pm, 7.50pm, 8.50pm, 9.50, 10.50pm, 11.50pm. The episodes will screen at Dendy cinemas, Opera Quays with one screening in Newtown. More information on those can be found at their website.
