The prizes were handed out at the 58th annual Drama Desk Awards last night (Sunday 19th May) in a ceremony at Town Hall in midtown Manhattan. The evening’s big winners proved to be musical and play revivals Pippin and Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? respectively, Cinderella, and Tony contender Matilda. A hit on both sides of the Atlantic, Matilda scooped a total of five honours, including outstanding musical, book and lyrics.
Once again, despite providing over half of the nominated productions, Off-Broadway shows received little winning recognition, with only Here Lies Love achieving three awards.
