Director Bryan Singer confirmed on his Twitter feed yesterday (23 May) that American Horror Story star Evan Peters was to play Quicksilver in his upcoming film, X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Fans are thrilled at the news of the Marvel character’s appearance in the latest X-Men movie. However, the news has also caused extreme interest as Quicksilver has also been confirmed to appear with his twin sister Scarlet Witch in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers 2. This was revealed late April in an interview Yahoo! Movies conducted with Whedon at the premiere of Iron Man 3. In discussing the latest developments in the Avengers 2 script he said: “I’ve got these two characters, two of my favourite characters from the comic book; a brother-sister act. They’re in the movie. That’s exciting”.

On the surface this may not appear to present a major problem, but you need to look at who controls the rights to each franchise and the issue becomes clear as they are held by two different competing studios. Fox holds the rights to the X-Men franchise and Disney has The Avengers. It is entirely possible that two universes could cross over though that may entail a bit of negotiating between the studios. There is also the possibility that Whedon has a different actor and look in mind for the character and decides to go down that route. It is going to be interesting to see how this conflict is resolved.

Already confirmed to return to the X-Men world are franchise regulars Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Sir Patrick Stewart.
