Les Miserables is slated to head back March 2014, 11 years after its historic 13 year run. The revised version will return at New York’s Imperial Theatre.

The sung-through musical, based on the novel by French playwright Victor Hugo, is the story of Jean Valjean and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his starving sister’s child. Valjean decides to break his parole and start a new life after a kind bishop inspires him to, but is followed by a police inspector named Javert. Along the way, Valjean and many characters are swept into a revolutionary period in France.

Casting for the musical new production will be announced later this summer, with previews beginning the first of March and opening night scheduled for March 23rd.

The original Les Misérables debuted at London’s Barbican Theatre in 1985, and it continues to play in the West End, making it the world’s longest-running musical. Last Christmas season, the musical was remade to fit the silver screen.
