Aaron Sorkin’s broadcast news drama The Newsroom is back for its sophomore season.

The HBO drama’s 90-second trailer showcases Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) traveling across a desert where he sees his team’s greatest desires, disappointments and threats to their happiness.

The first thing McAvoy sees is his desire to reunite with his ex: MacKenzie “Mac” McHale (Emily Mortimer), but, unfortunately it is revealed to be a mirage.

Meanwhile, Neil (Dev Patel) vents his frustration with technology (maybe his hunt for the mysterious commenter is turning into a wild goose chase) and the Jim-Maggie-Don-Sloan quadrangle promises to continue this season.  Which will definitely aggravate a lot of viewers.

In addition to all of their personal problems, Atlantic Cable Network CEO Leona Lansing (Jane Fonda)’s promise of cancelling News Night with Will McAvoy continues to loom over the crew.

While they may have won round one in this fight during the Season One finale, Leona will be back and looking for any reasons to pull the plug on the successful fictional newscast.

At the end of the trailer, the News Night group is reunited and before it goes to black, a phrase: “Together, They Stand Alone” appears. It is followed by the July 14 premiere date.

This season, a wrongful termination lawsuit will be the central story, while the Occupy Wall Street movement and the 2012 election will play heavily later on this season.    In addition, keep an eye out for guest stars Marcia Gay Harden and Patton Oswalt, who will make appearances throughout the season.
