New York, the infamously liberal state, has once again torn down societal barriers and bucked tradition.
Carmel High School seniors Brad Taylor and Dylan Meehan, eighteen, were the first openly gay couple to win the “cutest couple” vote in their senior superlatives. This hopeful news is a welcome change of pace when compared to other news-worthy stories about young same-sex couples.
The couple emailed a statement to the Huffington Post stating:
“This whole thing has been a bit surreal for us because we have been raised to believe that love is love. We never realized that our happiness and openness would inspire so many individuals. The support we have received from our family, friends, and even strangers has led us to believe that our affection for each other is normal … When we started dating a year [ago], the thought of a photo of us traveling throughout the world would be a bit frightening, but now we are proud to be part of the LGBT community.”
You may be wondering: “how did this couple end up in national headlines?” A friend of the couple, Chelsea Blaney, eighteen, took a picture of the couple in the yearbook and posted it on her blog with this blurb:
“Two of my best friends won Cutest Couple of our senior class. First time in my school history, a same sex couple has even been able to run for this category, not to mention winning it. So proud of them, and my school.”
When the list for the superlative nominees was released with only heterosexual couples, Blaney successfully lobbied in favor of gay couples being added to ballot. Her post has received well over 100,000 hits, and Blaney is also attempting to catch the attention of Ellen DeGeneres. DeGeneres is a vocal advocate of gay rights; especially that of same-sex marriage.
Congratulations to this fantastic couple. You are a hopeful breath of fresh air in this all-to-stale movement! Stay brave!
