Scott Weiland has hit back at his former bandmates by filing a countersuit against the rock band Stone Temple Pilots it was announced today (4 June).
The former frontman of the band was dismissed back in February of this year. At the time, the group released a simple statement saying: “Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland”. They wanted to move in a new creative direction and have subsequently replaced Weiland with Linkin Park singer, Chester Bennington.
In an added twist to the story, the band then filed a lawsuit against Weiland at the end of last month seeking unspecified damages. TMZ reported that STP alleged that Weiland was responsible for a loss of earnings for the band due to his lateness to shows and missing promotional appearances throughout their 20th anniversary tour. This behaviour, as well as refusing to communicate with anyone else in the band, is cited as evidence of Weiland trying to “hijack” the tour.
Weiland retaliated in an open letter to his fans on his website, saying: ”Like any band that’s stood the test of time and made music for more than two decades, STP had a special alchemy – the four of us together were greater than any one of us apart. So if my former bandmates want to tour with a new singer, that’s their prerogative… I don’t give a f**k what they call themselves, but it’s not Stone Temple Pilots.”
The latest development that emerged yesterday (3 June) is that Weiland has filed papers asking to dissolve the band’s legal partnership and is countersuing the remaining members. TMZ quotes Weiland as saying, “How do you expel a man from the band that he started, named, sang lead on every song, wrote the lyrics, and was the face of for twenty years?”.
Weiland is reportedly seeking at least $7 million in damages.
