Kevin Durant, one of the top 5 players in the NBA over the past 3 years, is leaving the sports agency Landmark Sports to sign with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports.
This is predicted to have a domino effect, especially among football and basketball players who are currently in their off-season.
Jay-Z, aka Shawn Carter, has sold his share in the Brooklyn Nets to allow him to become a sports agent. He’s yet to be certified with the National Basketball Players Association.
Roc Nation Sports is collaboration between Carter’s group and Creative Artists Agency.
Creative Artists Agency is an established power in the market, whose client list includes other basketball players Dwayne Wade (Miami), San Antonio’s Tony Parker, and Kentucky men’s basketball coach John Calipari.
Roc Nation didn’t comment on the signing of Durant, but an insider said:
“KD doesn’t want a traditional NBA agent anymore. He wants Jay-Z to handle his branding. …He had a chance to be with his idol and couldn’t say no.”
Durant is coming off the most productive season of his career, one in which he averaged 28.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.
Landmark Sports president, NBA agent Rob Pelinka, commented on the loss of Durant to Roc Nation saying, “We are honored & blessed to have worked on behalf of Kevin for a brief period of time.”
Prior to Durant, the highest profile signing to Roc Nation was baseball player Robinson Cano.
