We may not be seeing him donning his leather jacket as the Ninth Doctor in the upcoming 50th anniversary Doctor Who. Christopher Eccleston, however, will soon be returning to our TV screens.

It has been revealed that the 49 year old British star will join Justin Theroux, Ann Dowd and Tony-nominated star Carrie Coon in HBO’s new pilot The Leftovers.  The drama based on the novel of the same name by Tom Perrota involves a community which has undergone the Rapture (ascension to heaven) with unexpected results.  Eccleston will play the town’s reverend turned editor of a self-published newspaper, Matt Jamison.

Justin Theroux has been cast as Kevin Garvey, the police chief of the town of Mappleton, which has been left in pieces following the disappearance of the town’s “worthy” residents. Ann Dowd is playing Patti Levin, the leader of a cult Guilty Remnant.

Perrota will co-write the pilot with Damon Lindelof (writer of Star Trek:Into Darkness and Prometheus). Perrota will also act as executive producer for the pilot which will be directed by Peter Berg.

Movie goers will be able to see Eccleston play the evil Malekith in Thor: The Dark World which is due for release on November 8th 2013.
