US Official Poet Reappointed for Another Run

The Library of Congress is set to announce that Natasha Trethewey has been reappointed as U.S. Poet Laureate and will enter her second year in the position.

The Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, or commonly known as the United States Poet Laureate, serves as the nations official poet, and it is the responsibility of the holder to raise awareness, and obtain a greater appreciation for the reading and writing of poetry across the United States. The position is appointed annually by the Librarian of the United States Congress and serves from October to May.

Trethewey’s honours include the Pulitzer Prize and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition, she has also received four Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Book Prizes, two Lillian Smith Book Awards for Poetry, and fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Study Center and the Bunting Fellowship Program of the Radcliff Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard University, and her collection, Bellocq’s Ophelia, was named a Notable Book in 2003 by the American Library Association.

In addition to serving as the U.S Poet Laureate, Trethewey is also maintaining a simultaneous four-year laureateship as the State Poet of Mississippi and is the Robert W. Woodruff Professor of English and Creative Writing at Emory University.
