A Remake of Highlander? Sacre Bleu! says Lambert

It seems there’s a remake of 1986 classic Highlander with Ryan Reynolds in the title role.

Not a good idea, says the original Connor MacLeod, French-American actor Christopher Lambert.

Lambert said at the Monte Carlo TV Festival, “I’ve been hearing it for five years, never saw a script.” He went on to say, “I heard [from some people] that they don’t really want to go for a movie that’s going to be the exact replica of the first one, because everybody, they are conscious of the fact that the first one became…it’s really become a cult movie now…because of me…because of Russell Mulcahy, who is an incredible visual director still today…never seen a director with that type of imagination, taking that many risks.  And let’s not forget the music from Queen…”

“Don’t try to copy what the first one was – try to reinvent Highlander,” he added.

Would he be interested in a part in a remake? “Depends,” he said. “If it’s a wink to the audience, yeah, for the fun of it. If it’s a real part, no I don’t think so.”

So – what do you think? Should they tamper with a classic and perhaps sully its reputation forever? Or should they, in the spirit of Russell Mulcahy, take a risk and reboot?

As Monsieur Lambert says, it’s been doing the rounds for five years…most recently Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) left the project without a director when he departed in December last year…So it remains to be seen if it ever happens.
