Elba will find himself in good company after conquering this iconic role. He will join the ranks of such legendary actors as Morgan Freeman, Sidney Poitier, Danny Glover, and Dennis Haysbert (to name a few). All of these actors have portrayed Mandela in different movies and television specials.

Long Walk to Freedom will be directed by Justin Chadwick and will follow the activist from childhood, all the way to his successful election as President of South Africa. There will be a limited release of the film in North America on November 29th, which will mean that it shall make the cut for award season.

In order to stay true to the root of the story, the film was filmed in several South African cities such as KwaZulu-Natal, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Eastern Cape, Mandela’s home province.

The film will also star Naomie Harris (Skyfall) as Winnie, Mandela’s wife. It shall also feature several South Africans stars such as Tony Kgoroge, Zolani Mkiva, Lindiwe Matshikiza, Riaad Moosa, Jamie Bartlett, Terry Pheto, and Deon Lotz.
