You may have heard of the show Smash, a musical drama that was poised to be the next big thing for NBC. The show, which started out with bang, quickly fell from grace, ended up cancelled, and made many people question if a musical drama would ever work on primetime TV. But it seems that there is still some faith that a drama series with a music base for adults can be successful.

According to Deadline, the E! network (which is ironically ran by parent company NBC…the network that cancelled Smash), is in talks and close to giving the go ahead to a new muscial scripted pilot from writer Krista Vernoff, songwriter Diane Warren and Smash creators Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

The project, which is reportedly titled Songbyrd, follows Lauren Byrd, a character who is loosely based on top hitmaker Warren. According to reports from Deadline, “Lauren, writer of hit love songs, employs a small staff, including her sister, to enable and manage her eccentric, yet wildly successful process. But when her ex-fiance reveals himself to be less than the man she remembers, she realizes that she can no longer live in the past and must find a new, true inspiration for her sake and those around her.”

So what do you think? Will the Smash team get it right this time or should they give it a rest?
