Only days before Prop 8 in California was called “Unconstitutional” and made history in the world of LGBTQ rights, the Directors Guild of America also contributed to furthering gay rights by electing their first black and openly gay president, Paris Barclay.

“I am profoundly honored to be elected president of the DGA. The DGA has worked for more than three-quarters of a century to advance the creative and economic rights of directors and their teams, and I look forward to continuing this strong tradition of service. As the son of a glass blower and a tile maker from Chicago, I am extremely humbled to have the honor to serve in the footsteps of the legendary leaders of the DGA like Frank Capra, Robert Wise, and Gil Cates.” Barclay said after the election announcement had been made.

Barclay is an Emmy award-winning director with his name attached to television hits such as Glee, The West Wing, NYPD Blue, ER, and Cold Case, who has been openly gay since his college days at Harvard. He is married and is a father to two sons.
