In a recent Digital Spy article, director Peter Jackson said that audiences should expect The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be darker than its predecessor.
“When people go and see the film”, Jackson says “the comedic elements that were present in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be toned down.”
“This has less humor in it for sure. The first film was where we allowed ourselves to try and capture something of the children’s book, but it is really not appropriate to do that anymore,” Jackson told Empire via Digital Spy.
He added that the second film is about tackling the serious issues that are present in the novel, and he didn’t want to undercut it.
Amongst the sequel stars include Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Ian McKellan as Gandolf, Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug and Orlando Bloom who reprises his role as Legolas.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be released on December 13, 2013 with the final film There And Back Again scheduled for release on December 17, 2014.
