As the man who plays both John Watson in BBC’s Sherlock and Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit movies, Martin Freeman probably receives a very large amount of fanmail. However you might be surprised to know that in a recent interview the British actor said that he receives much more fanmail relating to Sherlock than The Hobbit.

The star does say that although he does get more attention than he did when he starred as Tim in The Office, Freeman still interacts with “people that have no idea who I am. Which is great for me as I usually just want to eat a bowl of pasta in peace.”

Talking about Sherlock, Freeman said it “is one of the biggest things I will do, ever – we could never have predicted that level of insanity around the series. I think that gets me more fan mail than Bilbo.”

He also said that he originally had to turn down Peter Jackson’s offer to play Bilbo due to the filming commitments around Season 2 of Sherlock. However, he was very pleased when the New Zealand director rearranged the filming schedule to allow him to play the iconic role of Bilbo Baggins.

Even though Martin Freeman is famous for playing the “nice guy” like Tim from The Office and Watson in Sherlock he says people would be surprised to realise he isn’t always ‘Mr Nice Guy’: “If someone had a pint with me, they’d find out pretty quickly I’m not so nice, I’m not Tim from The Office, although a lot of people still think I am. I have absolutely no problem telling someone to f**k off.”

Sherlock is due to return later this year. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is released in December 2013.
