The Sci-Fi movie Gravity, starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock will open the 70th Venice International Film Festival next month.
The 3D film, co-written, co-produced and directed by Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, tells the story of medical engineer Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) and veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) who become stranded outside their spacecraft after it is caught in a meteor shower. Tethered together, with no communication from Earth and very limited oxygen, the pair must find a way to work together in order to return home.
“It is a very odd film, really.” Clooney said in 2011, “Two people in space. No monsters. It’s more like 2001 [A Space Odyssey] than an action film”
Cuarón is probably best known for directing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and is certainly no stranger to the Venice Film Festival. He won Best Scenario and Best Young Male Talent in 2001 for his film Y Tu Mama Tambien. In 2006, he was awarded The Golden Ostella for Best Cinematography for his film Children of Men.
The Venice International Film Festival opens on August 28 and runs until September 7.
Gravity lands in cinemas across the US on October 4 and in the UK on October 18.
