This past weekend, the 48th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic had a couple of special guests. This little-known festival (albeit in its 48th year running) is one that features a wider range of films that may not be featured at other festivals. Tickets are affordable for any movie lover and student with access to a sleeping bag and beer. Oh wait, its Prague, everyone has access to those!
John Travolta and director Oliver Stone were being honoured with awards for their contribution to the filmmaking industry throughout the years, (or decades!).
While speaking to the young festival goers that visit the tiny city outside of Prague; Stone said when accepting the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema: “In the spirit of this I will say to those of you out there, young dreamers, do not cease the exploration of yourselves.”
Travolta also honoured with the Crystal Globe, treated the audience to a premiere of his latest film Killing Season (premiering in the US on July 12th). It didn’t win much regard, and opened to very mixed reviews, leaning a little toward the negative end. He plays a Serbian veteran of the Bosnian war, who goes ‘hunting’. Playing up against another acting stalwart, Robert DeNiro, who plays an American veteran, they form an unlikely bond (or tension) in the Rocky Mountain Wilderness. Expect a lot of action, and from the description ‘some torture’ from this film; as its directed by Mark Steven Johnson, of Daredevil and Ghostrider fame.
