Angelina Jolie is at the helm once again; directing her second film, Unbroken, about World War II hero, Louis Zamperini.
According to CBS News, “The film is an adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand’s bestselling 2010 book about Olympian and World War II hero Louis Zamperini, who raced on the U.S. team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and later survived in a raft for 47 days after his Air Force plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean in 1943 — only to then be caught by the Japanese and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.”
”I’ve had the privilege of spending a great deal of time with Louie Zamperini, who is a hero of mine, and now — I am proud to say — a dear friend,” Jolie said in a statement.
Famous movie-making brothers, Joel and Ethan Coen, are writing the screenplay for the film [based from drafts from previous writers Richard LaGravenese and William Nicholson] and Jolie will be directing, as well as producing the project.
It was just announced that British actor Jack O’Connell (Skins) has been cast in the lead role for the film which is set to start production in September. The 22-year-old will also be on the big screen next year in 300: Rise of an Empire alongside Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) and Eva Green (Dark Shadows).
Jolie’s first directorial effort, In the Land of Blood and Honey, earned her a Golden Globe nomination; will Unbroken’s theme and emotional appeal send her to the Oscars? You’ll have to wait until next December to find out!
