JK Rowling has a secret… in April she had her ninth novel published. However there was no fanfare because The Cuckoo’s Calling was published under a pen name.

Ms Rowling wrote the 450-page novel, which was called a “classic crime novel” in the style of other female authors such as Ruth Rendell or P.D. James. However the novel was published under the name Robert Galbraith. There was much speculation as to who this new writer was until someone noticed that Mr Galbraith had the same publisher AND editor as Ms Rowling.

Reviews of this novel were very positive and the plot line of the apparent suicide of a troubled young model led many readers to leave stunning reviews on sites such as Amazon.

Ms Rowling was approached this week regarding the identity of the elusive Robert Galbraith and said “I had hoped to keep this secret a little longer because being Robert Galbraith has been such a liberating experience. It has been wonderful to publish without hype or expectation and pure pleasure to get feedback under a different name.”

This is an unusual move for the much-loved author. However, it is possibly understandable considering that though her first adult novel, The Casual Vacancy, sold well, it received mixed reviews from readers and critics alike.

The Cuckoo’s Calling is available in hardback, paperback, e-book and audiobook versions.
