Joss Whedon’s much loved and killed-too-early space western TV show is being resurrected as a social online role-playing game! Announced this week at Comic-Con, Firefly Online is currently slated for release during the summer of 2014, reports Polygon.

Much like the show’s protagonist Malcolm Reynolds, players will play the role of the captain. While there’s not too much information out there, players will be able to gather crewmembers, go on missions, trade with other players, and customize their own space vessels. Hopefully this game won’t go the way of video-game-to-movie-adaptations. That is, hopefully it won’t crash, burn and die and be forced into obscurity the way the Browncoats were.

It will be interesting to see how – or if – the developers will include Firefly’s characters in the game. Regardless, it’s always exciting to see the resurrection of an old (but not completely forgotten) thing of the past. We’re talking a reintroduction of Firefly more than 10 years after it first came into being, people!

Fans of the TV series can register on the game’s official website and be at the forefront of any new updates.
