Ladies, grab your girlfriends, book a flight to NYC and get in line as Channing Tatum has confirmed that his hit stripper movie, Magic Mike, is on its way to the Great White Way!
The hit 2012 film was loosely based on Tatum’s own experiences of life as a stripper and rumours have been rife that it was being adapted for the stage. Now we’ve received word from the main man himself that the musical is a go. Tatum confirmed on his website on Monday that a “LIVE stage version of… Magic Mike” is being “fast tracked to the stage”.
The statement confirms that the show is being produced by Tatum, his partner Reid Carolin, the film’s director, Steven Soderbergh and co-producers Gregory Jacobs and Nick Wechsler. Songs for the production will be written by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey with the book written by Spiderman’s Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
Magic Mike tells the story of Mike (Tatum), the hot headliner in an all-male revue, who has been rocking the stage for years with his original style and over-the-top dance moves. Seeing potential in a guy he calls the Kid (Alex Pettyfer), Mike takes the 19-year-old under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of dancing, partying, picking up women and making easy money. It’s not long before the club’s newest act has fans of his own, as the summer opens up to a world of fun, friendship and good times.
While the project is being fast tracked, there is no word yet on when it’s likely to open.
