After 18 seasons, ABC has responded to heavy criticism and recruited a new Latino Bachelor.

32-year-old Juan Pablo Galavis, who some of you may recognise from the most recent series of The Bachelorette, will be the 17th Bachelor hoping to find Miss Right.

However, he may be number 17 but he also represents a massive first for the show: he is the first non-white Bachelor to star in the hit reality show.  There have previously been a small number of suitors from minority groups, including Juan Pablo himself, but the time for change has come, and not a moment too soon.

The retired Venezuelan footballer takes the lead after a court case in October accusing show producers of racial discrimination was dismissed by a federal judge.  Before appearing on The Bachelorette as a possible suitor for Desiree, the single father had never watched the show, or The Bachelor.

The show’s host, Chris Harrison, announced the new Bachelor during The Bachelorette: After The Final Rose special on Monday night. Harrison will be returning with Juan Pablo as The Bachelor in January.
