Doctor Who show runner Steven Moffat says you can’t keep a secret anymore – and that’s why he chose to reveal the 12th Doctor sooner rather than later.

In case you missed it, the actor who will portray 12th incarnation of the Time Lord was revealed this past Sunday on the Doctor Who special live show, Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor. The Thick of It actor Peter Capaldi will be making his way to the BBC One hit show.

If Moffat had his way, he would’ve chosen not to tell anyone any of the show’s secrets and castings. But rather than someone else going off and spilling it, Moffat wants to take it into his own hands. “It’s going to leak, so you have to take command of that story,” he revealed in an interview with Collider.

Moffat also pointed out that everyone has a camera with them at all times now, something that was rare years ago. “How am I going to keep secrets with that?!  It’s tough.  It can be irritating, but what can you do?” Can you imagine if the 12th Doctor news wasn’t revealed yet and they were out filming the Christmas Special of Doctor Who? One click and social media would be up in a frenzy, sparking rumors and buzz, with everyone wanting to be the first to break the news.

Now that the news is out, it’s not an issue. Whovians can expect to see Capaldi make his first appearance as the Doctor in the 2013 Christmas Special of Doctor Who.

But I can’t help but wonder what other secrets are brewing at the Doctor Who camp.
