To any Whovians out there that hoped to see Bill Nighy as the Doctor, we are sorry to tell you that’s never going to happen. Not only has the twelfth Doctor been cast, but Nighy actually turned down the role.
Despite strict protocols ordering actors to keep quiet about turning down the role, Nighy told The Daily Express, “I won’t tell you when, because the rule is that you are not allowed to say you turned that job down because it’s disrespectful to whoever did it. I will say that I was approached. But I didn’t want to be the Doctor. No disrespect to Doctor Who or anything, I just think that it comes with too much baggage”.
Bill Nighy was an early fan-favorite to play the Doctor before Christopher Eccleston landed the part back in 2005. While he didn’t take the gig, he did make an uncredited but memorable appearance on series 5 episode “Vincent and the Doctor” as art expert Dr. Black.
But there are no hard feelings. In fact, the About Time star has some kind words about the twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi: “He’s a marvelous actor. He’ll be very good as the Doctor. He’ll bring a lot of wit and dry humor. He’s elegant and he looks great”.
The 50th anniversary special of Doctor Who will air on November 23rd, in preparation for Matt Smith’s good-bye and Peter Capaldi’s debut on this year’s Christmas special.
