Breaking Bad may be meant to upset people, but that doesn’t mean its show runner, Vince Giligan, doesn’t have a heart. The hit show’s series premiere was, in fact, dedicated to a teenage fan named Kevin Cordasco, who had recently lost his battle with cancer. Cordasco was sixteen.

The teen’s mother, Melodie, was touched by the “heartwarming” gesture that came at the end of the episode, in the form of the words “Dedicated to our friend Kevin Cordasco.”

Cordasco was able to meet his heroes – including Vince Gilligan, who “thought he was such a smart, thoughtful young man and thought he had truly interesting insights on the show.” The teen also exchanged emails with the show’s award-winning star, Bryan Cranston, who would always reply to them quickly. Giligan found some of Cordasco’s questions about his characters to be so insightful, in fact, that they altered the show’s final eight episodes.

According to one of Breaking Bad’s executive producers, Melissa Bernstein, “Ultimately, the writers thought about it and I think they found a way to address his question…Kevin truly had an impact on the way the story played out in the final eight [episodes].”

Cordasco was actually offered a copy of the script for the show’s final episode, but he turned it down. According to Melodie, Kevin said, “Mom, I want to see it myself and I don’t trust myself – I might tell people.” Cordasco was also offered the chance to go to Aluquerque, NM, to watch the show being filmed. Unfortunately, he had been too sick to travel at that time.

Kevin Cordasco left the world entirely too soon, but thanks to his favorite TV show, he will never be forgotten.
