A misfit almost turned mutant. Robert Sheehan, who is best known for his role on Misfits as Nathan Young, the immortal turned magician, almost became Banshee in X-Men: First Class.
In an interview with Hot Press, the Irish actor revealed that X-men: First Class writer, Jane Goldman, wrote the role of Banshee specifically for him – an Irish actor for an Irish superhero.
According to Sheehan, he was cast in the film. Due to his involvement in the hit E4 science-fiction dramedy, however, he was let go. “There was a four or five week crossover with Misfits, and the studio came back and said, ‘No, we need full and free availability’, and all of a sudden I was un-cast.”
Friday Night Lights star, Caleb Landry Jones went on to take on the role of the screaming mutant in the 2011 blockbuster. On a side note, the character of Banshee won’t be returning in the 2014 sequel X-Men: Days of Future’s Past.
To think, we could have seen everyone’s favorite misfit take another supernatural role alongside Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy and Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence.
It seems like a missed opportunity but Sheehan is still making a name for himself. His role on Misfits earned him a BAFTA nomination in 2011 for Best Supporting Actor. He is currently starring as Darren Treacy in the Irish crime series Love/Hate.
We’re going to become more familiar with this talented young actor in the next few weeks.Sheehan will also be seen on the big screen as Clary Fray’s sidekick Simon Lewis in the film adaptation of The Mortal Instruments. His character will bring out the normal perspective in a world of strange and supernatural.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones hits theaters in the US on August 21.
