This Friday, two blockbuster biopics are hitting theatres, and they’re going to be competing for big box office numbers. Joshua Michael Stern’s Jobs, starring Ashton Kutcher, follows the story of Apple founder Steve Jobs, while the Oprah Winfrey and Forest Whitaker vehicle Lee Daniels’ The Butler tells the tale of Cecil Gaines, who worked for nearly four decades as the White House butler.
Though Kutcher is aware of the competition, at the Jobs premiere the Two and a Half Men star told Access Hollywood that he hopes audiences will take a positive message from both films. “I think it’s really dumb that people care about the box office,” said Kutcher. “I hope that people care about the movie and the message of the movie and the art.”
“I haven’t seen The Butler yet,” added Kutcher, “but I’m sure it has an incredible message and is a beautiful film and I know that [Oprah] attaches herself to things that inspire people and make people see the world in a different way. Our goal with making [Jobs] is to do the same thing. It’s to inspire people and make people see the world in a different way, make people think a little bit differently, if you will. And that’s what I hope for. I think the box offices are stupid and I think it’s something that like media propagates and I really think it’s a dumb thing.”
Of the man Kutcher was tasked with portraying in Jobs, Kutcher said, “I admire Steve Jobs, and I admire the work that he’s done in the world, and I admire the tools that he’s built for us to use to make our life better. I have a lot of friends and co-workers that knew him and loved him, and I learned to love him too. And I wanted to honor somebody that I loved and admire.”
Both Jobs and Lee Daniels’ The Butler hit theatres this Friday, August 23rd.
