“We just cleaned it up, put a Band-Aid on it,” his father, Ken Franklin, told CNN affiliate KCAL.
His parents started to worry that there may be an infection after his knee began swelling, and according to CNN, doctors told the family it could be a staph infection. Antibiotics seemed to help they said, but there was a lump that continued to grow beneath his skin. His mother decided to squeeze the wound, when something that appeared to be a small black rock popped out.
His mother told Sky News, “His knee was the size of an orange, and hot to the touch, and he’s limping.”
“[What came out] looked like a rock – it was a black thing and I put it on a paper towel. It had whirls and I turned it over and it was a sea snail, and I just, like, had to laugh.”
To all of this, the 4 year old had very little to say other than, “I thought it was kind of crazy.”
Kind of crazy indeed!
The family has since named the snail, which now lives in their fish tank, Turbo.
