Prince Gets Meta Promoting His New Single “Breakfast Can Wait”

Prince once famously declared that “the Internet is over” so you could imagine everyone’s surprise when joined Twitter earlier this month, tweeting from his female backing band 3^rd Eye Girl’s account (@3rdeyegirl), where he shared the artwork for his latest single, “Breakfast Can Wait,” under the heading “Game: Blouses.”

Confused? Well, as some of you may know, “Game: Blouses” is the best known line from one of Dave Chappelle’s “True Hollywood Stories” skits from The Chappelle Show. In the skit, after a game of pickup basketball, Chappelle (as Prince) and the whole crew eat pancakes. And as you can see, the artwork revealed by Prince himself shows Chappelle, in full Prince get up, holding a plate of pancakes. Who knew Prince was such a funny guy?

Prince released his debut album For You in 1978, which was followed in quick succession by Prince (1979), Dirty Mind (1980), and Controversy (1981) – all of which created significant, well, controversy, due to their fusion of religious and sexual themes.

In 1984, Prince created both the film and the album titled Purple Rain, and by the time he released his 11^th studio album, Batman, in 1989, Prince had become one of America’s most commercially successful recording artists.

Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable glyph symbol in 1993 which was a combination of the universal symbols for male and female, mixed with the alchemy symbol for soapstone. He kept the glyph until 2000, during which time he was most often referred to as “The Artist Formally Known as Prince.”

After several years of relative nothingness, Price returned at the 2004 Grammy awards, where he performed with Queen B herself – Beyonce. Later that year he released his 21^st studio album, Musicology. His next album, 3121, was released in 2006, and in the same year he wrote and performed “Song of the Heart” for  the animated film Happy Feet. That track won him that year’s Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

Anyway, back to Prince’s current headline-making behavior. Alongside the reveal of the artwork for “Breakfast Can Wait,” Prince  tweeted a 48 second teaser for the song, which can be heard via youtube right here:
