That is the lesson Alex Band learned the hard way over the weekend while playing a music festival in Lapeer, Michigan. The frontman for American rock band, The Calling, was walking to the grocery store when a van stopped and the occupants abducted him. The attackers beat and robbed the singer before abandoning him on railroad tracks nearby, according to reports from local police.

Band suffered “a fractured lower spine, 15 stitches to lower chin, three broken teeth and is bruised on his side and stomach from the baton beating,” his publicist said Monday.

Some were speculating the incident as a possible hoax to stir up attention or in relation to the singers past drug use. “This just happened to me. I didn’t kidnap myself, or beat the crap out of myself. So the whole hoax thing is honestly kind of disgusting to even think about, or hear,” Band told CNN.

The American rock band, The Calling, first hit the music scene back in 1999. After two albums and successful singles like “Wherever You Will Go,” the band went on hiatus in 2005. They recently reformed earlier this month minus original band member Aaron Kamin.

Check out The Calling’s hit single which was named #1 Adult Pop Song of the Decade by Billboard back in 2002.
