French stunner Marion Cotillard has replaced Natalie Portman in Michael Fassbender’s impending Macbeth project, which will be adapted by Justin Kurzel.

In fact, she will be playing one of Shakespeare’s most iconic characters, maybe ever, Lady Macbeth.

The film will stay true to the original story and will be set in war-riddled eleventh century Scotland.

Iain Canning, who will be producing the film, stated: “Cotillard has proven extraordinary versatility through her stunning performances in La Vie en Rose and Rust and Bone. Casting her as Lady Macbeth alongside Michael Fassbender will bring a fresh and exciting dynamic to the story of lovers pulled apart by war and ambition.”

Kurzel is an abashed fan of Cotillard, calling her “one of the bravest and most compelling actors I have watched in recent years.”

Cotillard has some giant shoes to fill as Francesa Annis, Keely Hawes, and Dame Judi Dench have also portrayed the damaged Lady Macbeth in the past. I have no doubt she will do the part justice.

I think this switch is absolutely the right move. Lady Macbeth needs a strength and fierceness to her that I don’t believe Natalie Portman possesses; but Cotillard has it in spades.
