After four seasons of playing tortured bad boy Damon Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder says that he sometimes has a difficult time with the emotional scenes.
In the beginning, fans of the hit CW show saw Damon as the older Salvatore brother who had no care in the world, but Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) came along and made him question everything.
While most of his emotional scenes are with Elena and the love they have for each other, we’ve also seen him share some intense scenes with his brother Stefan (Paul Wesley) as well as Rose and Alaric – the friends he’s lost.
But it’s not just acting for him and it doesn’t sound like it’s easy. “Sometimes it really hurts, and a lot of stuff that Damon goes through is super cathartic for me as an individual. It’s not always pretty – it stirs up stuff. You are basically muddying the water all the time. You are pulling from all these things in your life that are not necessarily good.”
It’s therapy for him. He gets to play off of his own experiences and that’s how he brings his character’s emotions to life.
He even revealed that he sometimes walks off set crying. Now that’s a man that’s in touch with his emotions.
“I’ll cry for ten minutes alone in my trailer and I look at myself in the mirror and go, ‘What the hell are you doing? Why are you crying in the trailer? Go have a coffee or something’.” Just the thought of Ian crying makes my heart hurt a little.
Although Elena declared her love for Damon in the season 4 finale, it’s not going to be all rainbows and butterflies. I’m curious to see what range of emotions Delena will go through this season especially since a new character (played by Shaun Sipos) has been cast that could potentially come between the two.
Whether it’s good or bad between the two vampires, it may be cathartic for Somerhalder considering that he and Dobrev split a few months ago.
