Often in some of the most suspenseful shows on TV, writers and actors always have fans asking the question, ‘Will they? Won’t they?’ about their favourite pairings. Following the season 4 finale of The Vampire Diaries, it looks like Damon, played by Ian Somerhalder, and Elena, played by Nina Dobrev, shippers got their answer as Elena declared her love for Damon.
In the lead up to the season 5 premiere, Somerhalder has spoken out about the relationship to Digital Spy. The 34-year-old actor described the relationship as “strange”. He stated that “It has gotta be so strange for this guy. He was so in love with Katherine for so many years… to be in love with this woman who really broke your heart, and then all of a sudden to find a woman who is identical in every way, shape and form, who is 160 years his junior.”
Somerhalder then compares being on the show to being in a marriage: ‘It’s a relationship. It’s almost ten months a year.”
Sadly, Vampire fans enjoy the relationship while you can as Somerhalder gives due warning, saying that the happy ending isn’t going to last for long: “bear in mind that this is The Vampire Diaries, so people being happy for long doesn’t exist.”
To see follow Damon and Elena’s relationship, the show’s fifth season premiere will air on October 3rd followed by its spin-off series, The Originals.
