The 60th Annual Hugo Awards were presented in San Antonio, Texas at the LoneStarCon 3 last night. The Hugo Awards are given for the best science fiction and fantasy works and achievements for the year previous. This includes television, books, podcasts, zines and movies.
For the past three years, Doctor Who has won in the category Best Dramatic Short Form for the episodes “Water of Mars,” “The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang,” and “The Doctor’s Wife.” This year, “Asylum of the Daleks,” “The Angel’s Take Manhattan,” and “The Snowmen” were all nominated. But, the three-year streak was broken by Game of Thrones and their season two episode entitled “Blackwater.”
The episode was the penultimate episode of the season, focusing on the Baratheon and Lannister war that the season had led up to. It was the only episode to not follow the characters outside of King’s Landing.
“Blackwater” was written by author George R.R. Martin, who accepted the award with Rory McCann (Sandor ‘The Hound’ Clegane). Martin, who writes the series of books the TV show is based around, said, “We’re in a golden age for science fiction and fantasy on screen.”
This isn’t the first time since 2005 that Doctor Who has been beaten in the category. The series won in 2006, 2007, and 2008 but was beat out by Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Songs in 2009.
Maybe next year Whovians can begin to establish another three-year streak.
