Hugh Jackman is reuniting with X-Men director Bryan Singer for the latest installment of the X-Men franchise, X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

Speaking with Access Hollywood, Jackman gave credit to Singer for his role in pioneering the modern superhero genre of film.

Jackman said: “Few people credit Bryan for what he deserves credit for, which is really inventing that genre. There wasn’t really a superhero genre before X-Men came out.”

“The idea that you could really dive in to the emotional life, to the vulnerability of these characters and that, as well as being fantastical, amazing and action, is what’s going to hook people and make them care. That’s what Bryan did, he had a lot of courage to do that.”

X-Men: Days Of Future Past will serve as a sequel of sorts to both the 2006 film X-Men: The Last Stand and 2011’s X-Men: First Class.

In addition to Jackman returning as Wolverine, X-Men veterans Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Halle Berry will reprise their roles as Prof. Charles Xavier, Magneto and Storm respectively, as well as see the return of X-Men: First Class cast members James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past opens in the UK on May 22, 2014 and in the US on May 23.
