Gary Friedrich’s five-year legal battle against Marvel may have finally come to an end. Initially, Friedrich filed the legal complaint in 2007, claiming he was the owner of the Ghost Rider character, Johnny Blaze, but it was dismissed. However, it was reinstated by an Appeals Court.
Friedrich ultimately hoped for compensation for the use of his character in the films, Ghost Rider grossed over $52 million in its first weekend. As well as the films, Freidrich wishes to be compensated for toys, video games and other merchandise involving Johnny Blaze.
The case turned against Friedrich when a Federal Court Judge, Katherine Forrest, argued that Friedrich lost his rights to the character in 1978. Yet, once again, it was overturned by the Appeals Court.
Marvel have given credit to Friedrich’s ideas, but believe that the creation of Ghost Rider and surrounding story are created as a collaboration, therefore they own the rights.
The specifics of the settlement is currently unknown, nevertheless, an end to this legal dispute may be within reach.
