We had a glimpse during her powerful “Swine” performance at the recent iTunes Festival in London, but in a new interview with ELLE magazine, Lady Gaga seems ready to bare all.

The ARTPOP queen revealed that even though she’s had great success over the last few years, she’s also felt tortured. “I am – Stefani is – a perpetually tortured artist,” she told the interviewer. “That’s why I changed my name. I can’t be her in public. She would be a mess!” Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, the Grammy winning 27-year-old now goes by Gaga.

In her earlier years, while promoting Born This Way and The Fame Monster, Gaga described her name change to Lady Gaga as a sort of joke; a mere “nickname that stuck”. Now it seems she’s open to elaborating on her deeper feelings, so will we be learning much more about the inner life of Mother Monster?

“I’m great under pressure,” she claims in ELLE’s October issue. “I’m a warrior. I’m Rocky, round 12.” She also describes some of the tribulations she endured to become a global superstar. “Everyone is so cynical – that I can’t purely love my fans, or share an honest story about my past, without someone asking me if I really, truly struggled. Do you know how much dirt I ate? Do you know the men I had to crawl through, the people that disrespected my body, my mind, my heart?”

Certainly, it sounds as though Gaga has overcome some tough obstacles. We look forward to reading everything she had to say, when the full interview hits stands September 24.

Gaga also explained why she decided to turn to the art world in making her latest album. “I went to look back to myself being 19, with all my Warhol books and all my Yoko Ono and John Lennon CDs, my Rolling Stones CDs and my Bowie…, and I said, what would she want me to do right now? Well she’d want you to call Jeff Koons and Robert Wilson and Marina Abramović and Inez and Vinoodh… And that’s what I did!”

Gaga poses for some stunning photographs in the ELLE spread, which, being Gaga, involve some fairly controversial fashion. We can’t say we’re too surprised, though she wears a Schiaparelli pink raccoon-fur headpiece and a pony-hair necklace… Not sure how the general population will react to that.

Whether you’re a Little Monster or you just can’t help singing along to “Applause”, there’s plenty to go gaga over in the near future. With her new record ARTPOP set to drop on November 11, Lady Gaga is also preparing for her gig as SNL host and musical guest very soon.
