Actress Naomi Watts recently walked out of an interview with BBC Radio journalist Simon Mayo, during her recent press duties for her new movie Diana. The Australian actress, who plays Diana, Princess of Wales, told the BBC presenter that she was being told to “wind up the interview”. Mayo disputes this fact as he had a production assistant at Claridges Hotel where the interview was taking place.
He said on his this Friday’s Radio 5 Live radio show ”As I said on last Friday’s programme, I wasn’t in the same room as Naomi but one of our production was, which is how we know that it was Naomi herself who chose to leave the interview before the ten minutes we’d been allocated was up.”
He also admitted he was “baffled” as to why the walk out took place.
The movie, which tells the story of Diana, Princess of Wales’ love affair with surgeon Hasnat Khan, has been poorly received in the UK.
Simon Mayo, did say that Naomi appeared nervous about doing the interview without the director Oliver Hirschbiegel, being involved. However the journalist said none of his questions were intended to cause any discomfort.
“I think it’s fair to say that Naomi sounded quite cautious and defensive through most of the interview. They wanted to do the interview with the director (Oliver Hirschbiegel) present, in case I asked any crazy questions about how Diana died.
“There was no intention and no point in asking those questions, because the film’s not about that. So we gave that insurance, and she does the interview on her own, and I think she was a little bit nervous about that.”
I did listen to the interview when it was broadcast on Friday, and I didn’t hear anything that would have caused Ms Watts to leave the interview, however it was clear she was uncomfortable.
