JJ Abrams Wants to Create an “Authentic” Star Wars Film

JJ Abrams certainly knows how to tease fans, keep studios happy and generate a lot of hype and talk about any project he’s associated with. This has definitely been the case with the latest Star Wars sequel, Episode VII. Since he was announced as taking the helm for the film eight months ago, he has said very little.

Recently EW spoke with the “secretive filmmaker” about his upcoming sci-fi action series, Almost Human and took advantage of opportunity to try and pry some more information on the sequel.

One thing that fans have been concerned about since Disney took over the rights for the franchise is losing a Star Wars feel to the sequels. Abrams addressed these concerns and promised that he and the creative team were “working really hard to make a movie that feels as emotional and authentic and exciting as possible.” He described the film presently as an “evolving thing” and because of this is was impossible for him to describe which of the previous films Episode VII is closest to in terms of spirit or tone.

Abrams was asked about the unsolicited advice he has been inundated with from fans and media alike. With immense tact he described the interest as being nice to see “how important it is and to be reminded how important it is to so many people”. He did, however, share something that has stuck with him and, in a way, has influenced what he is trying to achieve with the film – mainly because he feels the exact same way.

“I remember reading a thing somewhere, someone wrote about just wanting [the new film] to feel real; to feel authentic. I remember I felt that way when I was 11 years old when I saw the first one. As much of a fairy tale as it was, it felt real. And to me, that is exactly right.”

We have known for a long time that Abrams is as big a fanboy of Star Wars as the rest of us. He’s proven himself in projects such as Alias, Fringe, Lost and the Star Trek franchise. I think we’re safe in his hands.

Abrams’ new series, Almost Human starring Karl Urban and Lili Taylor, premieres November 4 on Fox. Star Wars Episode VII starts filming January next year.
