They say all good things must come to an end and this Sunday marks the end of one of the most unique television programs to have ever graced the airwaves.

Dexter, labelled by many as the “anti-hero”, tells the tale of the charming psychopathic serial killer, and wraps up its 8th and final season this week, having produced 96 episodes, over 100 kills and a whole lot of blood; and Michael C Hall says that the ending “may well be polarizing”.

In an interview with TV Guide, Hall was asked how he felt about the end of the series: “I feel good about it. I feel like it may well be polarizing. I think it will be a broad spectrum in terms of the response to how the show ends”.

Jennifer Carpenter, who stars alongside Hall as Dexter’s sister Debra Morgan, was asked the same question to which she replied, “I’m really satisfied. All I can hope for was something that felt legitimate with her. I feel like there are so many times when, for the sake of momentum in the stories, I’ve had to do things that went against my philosophies about Deb. The things I need to be true about her. This isn’t for the sake of the continuation of the excellent writing that we had. But the end all felt very organic and natural and honest. When I found out how her story was going to wrap up, I knew that they were discussing three separate paths for it to take, and I was champing for a path that wasn’t taken.”

Hall also went on to say that he was looking forward to moving on after the series ends and he says goodbye to Dexter. “I feel good about it. If you play a character long enough as an actor, your sense of acting and your sense of playing that specific character become fused in a way that it’s sort of a mind bender so I’m glad to sort of disengage from this particular guy and move on to other things.”

So Dexter lovers, what do you think of Michael C Hall’s comments? What do you think he means by “polarizing”? And how do YOU, the viewer, think Dexter should end?

The very last episode of Dexter will air on Showtime this Sunday, September 22 at 9/8c
