The Denis Villeneuve thriller Prisoners took over the top spot in the box office this weekend grossing about $21.4 million pushing Insidious Chapter 2 to the number two spot.  The film opened on over 3,000 screens across the US and grossed $7 million on Friday.

Critics have been praising the kidnapping drama starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, and 72% of the audiences were over the age of 25. Before its wide release, it screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Telluride Film Festival. Many think that it may be an Oscar contender for next year.

On its second weekend, Insidious Chapter 2 grossed $14.5 million dropping 64% from last weekend. So far the sequel has earned $60.9 million.

The break-dancing film Battle of the Year opened this weekend in 2,008 theaters across the US. It only grossed $5 million for the weekend, putting it in the 5th spot of the box office. It’s earned the title of the lowest opening weekend for a dance movie.
