The CW has released a dark new promotional poster for Supernatural‘s upcoming ninth season.
Standing in the foreground of an unkempt church are the show’s stars, supernatural hunters Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki). Ackles looks straightforward to the viewer with intensity, while Ackles appears to look down in serious thought.
In the backdrop are returning characters, ex-angel Castiel (Mischa Collins) and the demon Crowley (Mark Sheppard). Above them is what appears to be a shower of meteors, but are in fact angels falling from Heaven.
Courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, the official synopsis for the season nine premiere reads: “Dean is frantic after Sam collapses and the doctor tells Dean his brother won’t make it. Desperate, Dean sends out an all points bulletin via prayer to every angel in the area, asking them to help his brother. In exchange, Dean will owe that angel a favor. Numerous angry angels race to find and kill Dean, but one, Ezekiel, gets to him first. Meanwhile, Sam fights for his life and must face some familiar demons to do so. Castiel struggles to survive without powers.”
Supernatural returns on October 8 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
