The Hollywood Film Awards via their founder and executive director Carlos de Abreu have announced Gyllenhaal as their choice for the award following the actor’s performance in Prisoners, directed by Denis Villeneuve, from Montréal, Québec (Canada). The film debuted at the Telluride Film Festival a few weeks ago and opened on North American cinema screens this past Friday (September 20), earning $21.43 million in its opening weekend.
This award is not about the film’s earnings. It may be a little about Oscar buzz.
Villeneuve’s 2010 film Incendies was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2011 Academy Awards. This is his first English-language release. Gyllenhaal’s co-stars, including Hugh Jackman and Maria Bello, have been described as giving “strong performances.”
Gyllenhaal’s was given a “brilliant” one for his portrayal as a police detective who investigates the abduction of two young girls in a small American town. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, de Abreu says the 32-year-old Gyllenhaal gives “a truly compelling, subtly layered portrayal of a man tasked with the impossible and driven by the demons of his own past.”
To make things even more interesting with mere visuals, Gyllenhaal’s Detective Loki sports what look like DIY tattoos as well as a facial tic.
Speaking of Oscar buzz, by The Hollywood Reporter’s reckoning, over the past ten years, of all the actors honoured at the Hollywood Film Awards, 96 of them have been nominated for Academy Awards, and 34 have received them. The 2013 Hollywood Film Awards will be presented on Monday, October 21st at a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton
The film looks to be quite the dramatic thriller of morality and ethical dilemma – and now that Emmy Awards weekend is over, perhaps more viewers will go on the emotional roller coaster that Prisoners gives a definite impression of being. Congratulations to Jake Gyllenhaal on this award.
