It was back in July when Sacha Baron Cohen pulled out of the planned Freddie Mercury biopic, but since then, the precise reasons were never given; at least, until now. In an interview with Mojo, drummer Roger Taylor reluctantly explained why Cohen left the project.
“I don’t want to talk about the Sacha thing,” he said evasively, before being coaxed into giving an answer after all. “We felt Sacha probably wasn’t right in the end. We didn’t want it to be a joke. We want people to be moved.”
Frustrated, he added “I thought the music business was slow, but this has been like swimming in treacle.”
Still, the film has not yet been cancelled and the team is still working hard on making it happen. In fact, recently, Daniel Radcliffe was tied to the role, and despite the fact that he thinks he isn’t the right person for the role; the excitement about the project has definitely not died down yet!
Either way, it will probably still take quite a while before the film is released; so, for now, fans might just have to focus on the promised Freddie and Michael Jackson duet.
On that topic, Roger Taylor said that, “Freddie and Michael never finished the songs, because Queen had to leave LA to go on tour. Brian and I had worked on them, which means they’ll come out as Queen And Michael Jackson – hopefully… If the Michael Jackson estate can get its arse into gear.”
Patience seems to be the key. Fortunately there are still plenty of Queen albums to play on repeat to occupy us until then!
